Through the lens of a City in a Garden

By Stephanie Wong

Following my April reflection on the discipline of repetition, I find myself now in a different phase at the bench - one where ideas are beginning to take shape.

In the quiet rhythm of returning, refining, and beginning again, something new has been emerging. I have been working on a small collection of pieces that will be presented this year at Milano Jewelry Week - a milestone for my brand, and one that I approach with both excitement and care.

This collection is deeply personal. It is inspired by the place I call home - Singapore.

Often described as a "city in a garden", Singapore carries a character that I have always been drawn to. Modern buildings rise alongside older heritage structures. Glass and steel sit next to time-worn textures. And everywhere, there is greenery - within buildings, around them and sometimes climbing up their walls.

It is this interplay that continues to inspire me.

As I began working with a series of Dendritic Agate gemstones, I could not ignore what I was seeing. Each stone carries its own landscapes - delicate inclusions that resemble trees, branches, or quiet scenes held within. No two are the same.

It felt natural to place these miniature "landscapes" alongside structured metal forms - clean lines and frameworks that echo the built environment around us.

In this collection, I am exploring how these elements come together.

Soft, organic pattern set against precise metalwork. Free-flowing forms alongside deliberate structure. Nature held within, paired with crafted form.

Each piece begins with the agate - these quiet internal landscapes - framed in 18K Gold to highlight their detail. They are then set against darker, textured Silver, allowing the contrast to be seen more clearly.

Along the way, I found myself adding small accents of diamonds - not to draw attention away from the stones, but to introduce points of light that lift the overall piece.

As with much of my work, I am drawn to contrast. Tall and low. Old and new. Soft details and strong lines, held within a single piece.

This is what I see around me everyday. And this is what I find myself trying to express.

The process, however, has not been without its pauses. Over the past weeks, I have had to step away from the bench more often than I would like due to some health challenges. It has been a reminder that making does not always move in a straight line. There are periods of steady work, and there are moments when we need to slow down.

So I return, slowly but surely. Allowing the pieces to develop at their own pace, and trusting the process along the way.

I hope to complete these pieces by the end of May, and I look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks. For now, I will leave you with a small glimpse - a quiet preview of what is in progress.

Sometimes, beauty is not only in the finished piece, but in the process of bringing it to life.
