Navigating high gold prices: how to choose jewellery that lasts

By Stephanie Wong

As the festive season arrives, many of us begin thinking about meaningful gifts. Jewellery often comes to mind - it's personal, it's lasting and always special. But with gold prices at an all-time high, it's natural to pause and reflect on what truly makes a piece valuable.

As an independent artisan jeweller, this question feels especially close to home. The cost of materials directly shapes every decision I make, from design and craftsmanship to the final creation you hold in your hands. When gold prices soar, it affects not only the business side of things but also how I design: I find myself thinking more deeply about proportion, weight and versatility.

For me, value has never been just about the price of gold. It's about the thought and intention behind each piece; how it's designed, how it's made and how it fits into your everyday life. Jewellery should make sense for how you live: something you actually wear and enjoy, not just keep for special occasions.

When I designed my 18K gold jewellery pieces, especially my new collection of gemstone earrings, I think about versatility and purpose. Each piece is made to feel substantial yet comfortable, elegant yet easy to wear every day. I love the idea of investing in one timeless piece that truly works for you - something you will reach for again and again. In today's market, where gold is more precious than ever, choosing thoughtfully gives each piece even greater meaning.

I've also noticed a growing appreciation for sterling silver. It's a beautiful option for those who love the look and feel of precious metal but prefer something lighter, more affordable or better suited to a cool skin tone. My silver designs share the same care and attention to detail as my gold pieces - clean lines, simple forms and a design language suited to Singapore's modern lifestyle and weather. Silver also mixes wonderfully with gold, allowing you to create your own everyday combinations. Some of my favourite pieces are Sterling Silver and gold-mix designs - contemporary, understated and versatile.

This year, I want to take a moment to thank all my clients for their trust and continued support. Your belief in the work of independent makers like me means more than ever, especially at a time when the cost of materials is rising so sharply. When you invest in a piece of jewellery today, you are not only choosing something meaningful and beautifully made, you are also investing in its lasting value, both sentimental and material.

So as you explore jewellery this festive season, choose what feels right for you - perhaps a pair of 18K gold earrings that go with everything, or a sleek sterling silver pendant you will wear often. The best choice is the one that feels personal, practical and enduring.

After all, a single, well-chosen piece you truly love will always hold more value, in every sense, than a box full of things you rarely wear.
