January: Beginning again
January has a way of inviting reflection - a pause between what's been done and what's still taking shape. For me, it isn't about resolutions or dramatic fresh starts, but about a way of living and making that values beginning again, often and quietly.
This philosophy shapes both my life and my jewellery practice. Ideas don't move in straight lines. They return, stall, reappear, and occasionally surprise me by finally making sense. Progress happens through attention, patience, and the willingness to come back to the bench - sometimes more than once.
This monthly blog continues as a studio journal for Stephanie Wong Jewellery - a space to share where the work is, what I'm exploring, and how ideas move from thought to form. The focus isn't only on finished jewellery, but on the process that gets it there: reflection, testing and return.
January in the studio is less about launching new collections and more about clearing the decks. I've recently finished a piece that had been sitting unfinished for longer than I care to admit, and the quiet satisfaction of completing - intentionally, slowly, and without forcing it - reminded me why this matters. Clearing unfinished work creates space, both on the bench and in the mind.
In jewellery making, progress is rarely linear. Some ideas resolve quickly; others need time, distance, and the occasional long stare before they cooperate. Allowing work to rest - and the returning to it - is not a delay; it's part of the design practice.
Alongside bench work, January is a time for research and inspiration. Architectural forms and spatial design are influencing my work - studying structure, proportion, and restraint, and exploring how these ideas translate into contemporary jewellery. Beginning with form before surface keeps the work grounded and intentional.
On the bench, I'm working with Dendritic Agates - stones that carry their own miniature landscapes within their inclusions. Each one sets its own pace. Rather than rushing to impose a design, I'm letting the material lead, which often results in better decisions (and fewer regrets!!).
I'll be sharing work in progress regularly - not finished jewellery, but glimpses into the making process, from sketches to stones to moments of decision. These ongoing studio explorations can always be found on Instagram at @stephaniewongjewellery
January, for me, is not about starting over. It's about continuity - paying attention, finishing what needs finishing, and beginning again as often as needed. Slowly, surely, and with intention.
